A BACnet explorer
alternative for mixed sites

YABE (Yet Another Bacnet Explorer) is a solid, free BACnet/IP browser that plenty of engineers know well. If your site is BACnet/IP only and you never need schedules edited or Modbus polled, it may be all you need. BACManager is for the sites that aren't that simple — MS/TP field devices, schedule and calendar commissioning, and Modbus meters sharing the panel — in one licensed, supported tool for $149 one-time.

// why engineers look for an alternative

What sends people looking

YABE does its core job — BACnet/IP discovery and property browsing — well, and free is a real advantage.

The friction usually shows up once the job goes past discovery and browsing. MS/TP field devices need a real serial master node, which a browser built around BACnet/IP doesn't provide. Editing a Schedule object commonly means opening the vendor's own engineering software instead. And the moment a site's energy meters or VFDs turn out to be Modbus — which most mixed buildings' do — a BACnet-only tool means a second application. None of this makes YABE a bad tool; it just means the job frequently needs more than one.

BACManager vs YABE

An honest comparison. YABE is free and open-source; BACManager is a commercial, licensed tool built for mixed BACnet+Modbus sites.

// what you gain

Three things a free explorer doesn't cover

🔌

Real MS/TP

A full master-node implementation over RS-485 — joins the token ring and talks to serial-only field devices, not just BACnet/IP.

📅

Schedule editor

Weekly grid editing for Schedule and Calendar objects, validated byte-for-byte against reference stacks — not a vendor tool detour.

🔢

Modbus, built in

RTU and TCP polling for the meters and drives that share almost every real BACnet site, in the same window.

// being fair

When YABE is the right call

If your work is entirely BACnet/IP, you never need to edit a schedule directly, and there is no Modbus in the picture, YABE's price is hard to argue with — it's free, capable, and has a long track record in the BACnet community. BACManager earns its price on sites that are messier than that: MS/TP segments, schedules that need editing on-site, and Modbus meters that would otherwise mean a second tool. The fastest way to know which camp your work falls into is to run BACManager's free trial against your own site.

// questions

Alternative — FAQ

Is BACManager a drop-in replacement for YABE?+
For BACnet/IP discovery and property browsing, yes — the core workflow is similar. BACManager adds MS/TP support, a Schedule and Calendar editor, EDE export, and Modbus RTU/TCP polling, which YABE does not include.
Why would I pay for BACManager when YABE is free?+
If your site is BACnet/IP only and you never need schedules edited, EDE export, or Modbus, YABE may be all you need. BACManager is for mixed BACnet+Modbus sites, MS/TP field devices, and schedule/calendar commissioning work in one licensed, supported tool.
Does YABE support MS/TP?+
YABE is primarily a BACnet/IP tool. BACManager includes a full MS/TP master-node implementation over RS-485 for field devices that are serial-only.
Is the price a subscription?+
No. BACManager is a one-time $149 license with free updates within the major version — no subscription, no per-point fees.
